Susan takes 7th at the 2009 SCAA's Mountain Regional Barista Competition!

The Black Cup owner, Susan Price, competed for the second time in the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Mountain Regional Barista Competition. What’s involved with a Barista Competition you might ask. Well…

The Barista uses a provided, traditional espresso machine to serve four sensory judges four straight espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks, all in 15 minutes. There are also 2 technical judges hovering around as well as a head judge watching and judging every move the barista makes. The barista brings his/her own espresso blend, cups, spoons and any other supplies they might need. The signature drink needs to be a small size with espresso being the major flavor, but they are judging on creativity and taste.

There are two rounds at the regional level. The top six from the first round go on to repeat their performance in the second round. The winner receives an all expense paid trip to the United States Barista Competition where they compete against the best of the best from all 50 states. The winner of the USBC goes on to compete in the World Barista Competition where over 40 countries represent, and which an American has never won!

Susan took 5th last year and 7th this year. Each year, taking in what she will need to work on to get better. This year’s signature drink was called a “Spiced Espresso Whisper.” It was a single shot of espresso topped with a spiced milk foam flavored with Ufra Crushed Red Pepper flakes and Kumquat rind, served with a clove flavored sugar strip that had to be put in the mouth before the drink was sipped. She got kudos for creativity and being well prepared!
